Timeline of Technological Development and UT ECE

YearEvent
1883 UT opens. There are 2 departments: Academic and Law. Tuition is free.
1888 Thomas Taylor begins teaching engineering at UT. The state capitol is dedicated.
1895 Houston gets 20 inches of snow. Moonlight towers make Austin the second city in the world to have electric light. Engineering is established as an independent department at UT.
1903 Steam turbine and electrocardiograph are invented. School of Electrical Engineering is established at UT under Taylor's leadership. The curriculum focuses on electrical power systems.
1910 Four year BSEE degree and the Engineers Loan Fund are established at UT.
1936 More than 18,000 miles of high-tension lines crisscross Texas.
1945 UT's Defense Research Laboratory (DRL) and Electrical Engineering Research Laboratory (EERL) are established. Research at the EERL produces radio telescopes, something the Associated Press views as one of the three most significant American accomplishments of that century.
1947 First female faculty member, Edith Clarke, joins as an associate professor after a long career with General Electric.
1954 First operating system is developed.
1957 Sputnik is launched.
1958 Integrated circuit is invented and the first external pacemaker is introduced.
1961 Silicon chips first appear.
1962 Frank McBee and some other researchers in the DRL found Tracor.
1964 Basic is introduced and Moore's Law is coined. The ENS building is completed and Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is created. Research at the ARL contributes to the development of geodetic positioning systems, the underwater acoustics used in modern oceanography, and improved methods of data management, data analysis, and signal processing.
1970 First optical fiber is developed.
1972 Email is introduced.
1976 Dr. James Truchard, Bill Nowlin, and Jeff Kodosky—all researchers at ARL—launch National Instruments.
1981 The first PC is manufactured. The Department of Electrical Engineering becomes the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
1982 First PC clone is manufactured.
1992 WWW is a reality.
1994 LRC computer labs are opened in the ENS.
1996 Tony Ambler joins ECE faculty.
2002 There are almost 40 million sites on the WWW.
2003 ECE celebrates 100 years of innovation and our contributions to the Texas economy and to the world of knowledge.
