Augmented Reality in the Great Outdoors

By seamlessly overlaying virtual content with real-world scenes, augmented reality (AR) provides new and improved experiences for navigation and entertainment. Current outdoor AR applications typically rely on smartphones with GPS and camera-based computer vision. For this project, we have created a proof of concept of a next-generation outdoor AR system that broadens the areas of applicability for this technology. We have developed multiple augmented reality headsets that use centimeter-accurate RTK-CDGNSS GPS positioning technology and a software application in which users can interact with objects they and other headset users create with their hands.
