First-Year Interest Groups (FIG)

In 1998, The University of Texas at Austin launched the First-year Interest Groups (FIG) program.  FIG is designed to bring together many facets of the university experience into a small community of 18 – 20 newly admitted students.  As a cohort, all FIG participants take two to four classes together during their first Fall semester at UT Austin.

FIGs allow our students to build a community of support that discusses critical topics like:

  • Study and time management strategies
  • Campus engagement opportunities
  • Leadership development

To make this program available to all of its students, the ECE Department offers fifteen FIG seminars that are open to all incoming first year and externally transferred ECE students. Each program participant attends a weekly seminar facilitated by an academic advisor and an ECE peer mentor.  If you are interested in enrolling in an ECE FIG, registration will take place during Summer Orientation.
