Today's cloud systems heavily rely on redundancy for reliability. Nevertheless, as cloud systems become ever more structurally complex, independent infrastructure components may unwittingly share deep dependencies. These unexpected common dependencies may result in correlated failures that undermine redundancy efforts. The state-of-the-art efforts, e.g., post-failure forensics not only lead to prolonged failure recovery time in the face of structurally complex systems, but also fail to avoid expensive service downtime. In this talk, I will present a series of work towards preventing correlated failures not only in a single cloud datacenter but also across multiple cloud providers.

In this talk, I will present my recent and ongoing research towards realizing this vision. I will start by describing a computational approach for learning and predicting everyday activities from images taken with a wearable camera, and a complementary method for mitigating privacy concerns with first-person vision. Both of these approaches leverage deep learning algorithms, which have shown to be particularly well-suited for image recognition tasks. The second part of my talk will be focused on the detection and modeling of health-related behaviors. In particular, I will demonstrate three distinct techniques for recognizing dietary monitoring activities. The first technique uses on-body inertial sensors placed on the wrist while the other one centers on a novel, lightweight and non-contact wearable necklace. Lastly, I will show how eating episodes can be identified through auditory scene analysis. I will conclude the talk by describing on-going research activities in my laboratory and highlighting future research directions.

Internet of Things (IoT) is connected set of physical devices (called “smart devices”), consisting of sensors and actuators that enable a general class of cyber-physical systems such as smart homes, smart vehicles, smart buildings, smart cities, and intelligent transportation. To enable IoT systems to be managed and controlled, software platforms such as SmartThings by Samsung and IFTTT have emerged. In this talk, we systematically examine the security of such platforms.

Imaging plays a critical role in advancing science. However, as science continues to push the boundaries of knowledge, traditional imaging approaches are reaching observational limits. In this talk I discuss how combining ideas from physics, signal processing, and machine learning has allowed us to transcend these limits in order to see people moving behind walls and take the first picture of a black hole.
