Novel Electromagnetic Wave Front Manipulation through Antenna and Material Engineering

While antenna and material engineering have been applied in every corner of modern electronics, it is becoming increasingly interesting to develop novel radiation structures based on fundamental physics. In this talk, we will discuss some of our new designs rooted in basic electromagnetic wave propagation and polarization manipulations. We will focus on three types of new structures: (1) The magneto-electric antenna, which employs both electric field and magnetic field of electromagnetic waves. Our effort uses composite right/left-handed and leaky wave structures to implement beam scanning and low profile planar structures. (2) Orbital angular momentum generation, which can generate the phase structured beam in the microwave frequency domain. We provide solutions that have high efficiency or easy integration. (3) Nonlinear Yagi-Uda antenna, which employs the second harmonic generation of nonlinear plasmonic effects from nano particles to implement spatial beam separation depending on the frequency. Theoretical motivations, numerical analysis methods, and relevant implementations will be discussed in detail.

Prof. Li-Jun Jiang received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004. From 2004 to 2012, he worked at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in NY as a postdoctoral researcher, research staff member, and senior engineer. Since the end of 2009, he has been an Associate Professor (tenured in 2014) with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Currently he is the director of Electromagnetics and Optics Laboratory at HKU. Since Sep. 2014, he is also a frequent Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Los Angeles.

His research interests include applied heterogeneous electromagnetics for high speed VLSI, electromagnetic compatibility/interference, remote sensing, scattering, antenna and microwave engineering, and electromagnetic material engineering.

Dr. Jiang received the IBM Research Technical Achievement Award in 2008 and the Outstanding Technical Contribution Award at 2016 APEMC. The research team he built at HKU has received many international awards including the 1st Place Best Student Paper Award of 2014 ACES in FL, the 23th IEEE EPEP Best Paper Award in 2014, Young Scientist Award of 2016 EMTS, the Best Poster Paper Award of 2016 IEEE EPEPS, Best Student Symposium Paper Award First Place of 2016 IEEE Int. Symposium on EMC, President's Memorial Award Presented in Memory of Guy deBurgh and Bill Kimmel of 2016 IEEE Int. Symposium on EMC.

Dr. Jiang served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, an Editor of Progress in Electromagnetics Research, an Associate Guest Editor of the Proceedings of IEEE Special Issue in 2011~2012. He was the Semiconductor Research Cooperation (SRC) Industrial Liaison for several academic projects. He served as a TPC member, session organizer, and session chair of many international conferences. He was also the TPC Chair of the 7th International Conference on Nanophotonics (ICNP), the Co-chair of International Workshop on Pulsed Electromagnetic Field at the Delft, the Netherlands, 2013, the Chair of 14th IEEE Hong Kong AP/MTT Postgraduate Conference, the TPC Chair of 2016 APEMC, and the SC1 TPC Chair of PIERS since 2014.
