Financial Support

A solid two-thirds of UT-ECE graduate students received financial support this year. When you apply for admission to UT-ECE, you are automatically considered for all types of funding. You don't need to submit a separate application for support.

Financial support takes the forms of Fellowships, Teaching Assistantships, Graduate Research Assistantships, and Internships. Students also find support through financial aid and other employment on and off campus.

Fellowships

For students at the graduate level, a scholarship is called a fellowship. Awarded for academic merit, a fellowship does not require the recipient to work, only to study. The amounts of the fellowships range from $1,000 to around $20,000. A select few students receive combined fellowship awards totaling up to $40,000.

UT awards fellowships to recruit students and to support students who are already studying here. Fellows are usually presented in Fall semesters and may include an offer of a Teaching Assistantship. More...

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships may also be a part of financial support packages. Teaching Assistants (TAs) who work 20 hours/week receive a salary, health insurance benefits, and in-state tuition. Although responsibilities for TAs vary with each professor, work usually includes grading exams and papers, leading discussion or laboratory sessions, and keeping office hours to help students with coursework.

Graduate Research Assistantships

Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) positions are usually awarded by individual faculty members. GRAs who work at least 20 hours per week earn a salary, pay in-state tuition, and may be eligible for health insurance benefits. Because GRAs are involved in actually doing research rather than studying it in a textbook or journal article, they often base their own research and dissertation on their work.

Internships

Internships are another source of funding for graduate students. Many high-tech companies and organizations are based in Austin, and they frequently hire interns. Professors may have access to information on internships, and students themselves can seek out and acquire an internship. More...

In addition, the Engineering Career Assistance Center (ECAC) arranges campus visits by local and national companies.

Financial Aid

The Office of Student Financial Services is the primary source of information about federal, state, and institutional need-based financial aid, as well as merit/need-based scholarships.

Other Employment

UT offers a convenient and easy system called hirealonghorn.org for students to find local part-time and full-time employment. Positions vary from Internet development to housekeeping. In addition, students can look for jobs on The University's Department of Human Resource Services.
