Capstone design projects are two long semesters in duration (Fall-Spring or Spring-Fall). Student teams are generally made up of four to six students.
At the start of the semester, students form teams, review all project proposals and bid on the projects in which they have the most interest. See Let’s Get Started for more information on how to submit a project proposal.
Each team is assigned a faculty mentor from a content area similar to the project. The company assigns an engineer to be the point of contact for the team, providing mentoring and industry expertise. The company engineer is expected to spend an hour per week (in person or remotely) with the team during the first month of each semester and one half hour per week thereafter. Additional time with the team is welcome and encouraged at the sponsor’s discretion. Together, the faculty mentor and company engineer co-supervise student teams to guide the project focus and outcome.
The project partnership contributions are outlined in the chart below and includes all basic course expenses and a spendable budget for the student teams. Extraordinary expenses or equipment should be noted in advance and provided for by the company.

Corporate partners have three options to choose from when sponsoring a senior design project:
- Senior Industry Projects offer companies the opportunity to work with a diverse group of ECE students with multiple skills and abilities. The project proposal is generated by the company, which allows for more flexibility and input from industry.
- Honors Industry Projects offer companies the opportunity to work with a team primarily comprised of ECE honors students. Projects are generated by faculty & company sponsors may offer input on the problem statement.
- Interdisciplinary Projects offer companies the opportunity to work with students and faculty across disciplines on a complex issue that is generated by the company.
