Policies
Computing policies for the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) Department.
Accounts
ECE provides a computer account to all qualified individuals. Users are allowed access to lab workstations as well as many other computing services.
Computer Usage
Computers in the labs are available on first-come, first-serve basis. For security purposes, the Windows machines will lock themselves after 5 minutes of inactivity. After 15 minutes of inactivity, Windows machines will close any open programs and log themselves off. ECE-LRC computers are to be used for academic course work only. Sharing passwords or allowing others to use your account is strictly prohibited. Violating any these policies will result in your account being disabled.
Food and Drinks
Food and drinks are not allowed in any of the labs. Anyone caught violating this policy will be asked to remove the prohibited item from the lab. Refusal to do so, or repeated violations will result in your account being disabled.
Personal Computer Systems
With exception to ECE-LRC Laptop Initiative, ACS will not provide hardware and software support for computer systems and peripherals that are not part of the UT System. Systems must have a UT Asset Tag or be in the process of being tagged.
Items not supported include:
- Personal Laptops
- Personal Desktops
- Personal Peripherals
If a faculty or staff member needs a system for official university business, ACS will check out a laptop or desktop until one of the following occurs:
- Faculty/staff member no longer needs the system provided
- A permanent system has been provided for the faculty/staff member
- Faculty/staff member is no longer part of the university
Software Requests
Requests for new software packages or software upgrades can be placed by faculty only. Requests must be submitted to the helpdesk. New software packages or upgrades need to be extensively tested before they are integrated into the computer image. Due to the testing required, new requests must be placed by the following dates:
- Fall semester: July 1
- Spring semester: December 1
- Summer semester: May 1
Requests placed after the deadline will be installed during the mid-semester image.
