Welcome to our new graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and faculty! And welcome back to everyone else. We are extremely pleased that our national recognition has improved in the past year. The latest US News & World Report ranks UT-Austin's
Each of our programs is in the top 10. We are the only department in the Cockrell School of Engineering to move upwards this year.
The ENS is bursting at the seams. To relieve the congestion, UT has moved some modular buildings onto the parking lot just south of the ENS and onto the lawn just north of it. The building on the lawn is being used by Computer Science. The building on the parking lot, i.e., The Shed, aka ACA, holds the labs that used to be on the third floor of the ENS and the replacement classroom for ENS 302. If you have a class scheduled in ENS 302, it will be in ACA 1.104. The after-hours fifth floor Linux-and-Windows lab, formerly ENS 507, is now located in ENS 317. The three third floor Windows-only labs have been relocated to ACA. ENS 317, the largest lab, has been relocated to ACA in room 1.102. ENS 334 and ENS 340 have been relocated to ACA in rooms 1.108 and 1.106 respectively. ENS 507 -> ENS 317 All this moving about has changed the hours of the labs slightly. ENS 317 ACA 1.102, 1.106, and 1.108 7th Floor Student Lounge to Open The University Co-op's ENS student lounge project is almost finished. Phase one was the Ohm's Coffee Shop which opened at the front entrance of the ENS last fall. Phase two is the refurbishment of the 7th floor "penthouse". An outside terrace has been added and the interior area is being completely remodeled and furnished. The penthouse will open on Tuesday, Sept 25 at 10 AM at the Co-op Appreciation Reception. Be there or miss free food! The Help Desk: ENS 340 | 232-3383 | help@ece.utexas.edu The Help Desk handles all departmental IT operations including building network maintenance, faculty/staff desktop issues, VOIP telephone configurations, and computer lab support. It is open to handle walk-ins from 8am-12pm and 1pm-6pm. It is the place to drop off broken laptops from the student laptop initiative. To create a LRC account: https://www.ece.utexas.edu/acme/ This fall we welcome three new professors
and three new staff members to the ECE family.
Long-time External Advisory Committee member, Mark McDermott, has accepted a Research Fellow appointment. He has 30 years of experience in product development of silicon systems, has co-founded six companies, and is on the technical advisory boards for 4 design automation companies. His research interests are improving design and verification productivity for silicon system design. He received his B.S. degree from the University of New Mexico and his M.S. degree from UT-ECE. Dr. Ariane Beck is the new Assistant Chairman. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from UT-ECE. Her PhD research focused on ultraviolet photodetectors, wide bandgap semiconductors, and single-photon counting. Blake Lyles joins the IT group as a Microcomp App Spec, meaning he will work on LRC computers. He is from Dallas and used to work at Texas Women's University. Other changes in the IT group are the promotions of Nick Silkey to supervisor of the UNIX team and Roland Rocha to supervisor of the new Help Desk and the Lab Software Support. Renee Sobremonte joins the undergraduate office. She is from Austin and graduated from the UT Business school.
The Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering at both The University of Texas at Austin and at Carnegie Mellon have created a joint Graduate Student Fellowship in her name – Margarida’s passion was for her research and for her students and it would seem very appropriate that we should do this. If you would like to make a donation to this Fellowship, please send your contribution made out to ‘The University of Texas’ and marked ‘For Margarida’ to:

I
am saddened to announce that our Graduate Advisor, Professor
Margarida Jacome, passed away on the morning of Friday, May
25th, having battled against cancer for several months. We were
deeply shocked at her passing on but are left with fond memories
of her presence, character, hard work, and technical prowess -
she was loved by everyone who came across her.
