Prof. Alexis Kwasinski and Collaborators Awarded NSF Grant for Work on Powering Cellular Network Base Stations from Renewable Sources

UT ECE professor Alexis Kwasinski in collaboration with the Prof. Andres Kwasinski of the Rochester Institute of Technology has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant as part of the CyberSEES program for work on investigating techniques to power cellular network base stations from renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic modules. The project will investigate how to integrate communications traffic and electric energy management in a microgrid formed by a small group of wireless communications cell sites. This proposed system architecture will improve the resiliency of the cellular networks and address their carbon footprint allowing continued operation under extreme events.
