UT Solar Vehicles Team
The University of Texas Solar Vehicles Team is a student-driven effort to design, build, test, and race solar vehicles for the purpose of raising awareness of solar power, reinforcing skills learned in the classroom, and bringing solar power closer to practicality. To accomplish this task, we are a multidisciplinary group consisting not only of various engineers from the College of Engineering, but also of students from other colleges, like the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences. We build cars that are completely powered by the sun and enter them in local and national competitions. The team has been around in one form or another since the early 90′s, but recently our latest car, the Samsung Solorean, has competed in the 2009 and 2010 Formula Sun Grand Prix as well as the 2010 American Solar Challenge. We are currently designing a new car to enter into the 2013 American Solar Challenge, named the TexSun. This is also a joyous occasion for us since we will be hosting the competition from Austin. In addition to participating in races, the team spends a great deal of time participating in outreach events to educate the general public about alternative energy.
