64-Bit Linux Application Servers
How to log into the Linux Application Servers
From Linux or Mac OS X
Open a terminal window:
To enable X Windows Session (X11):
ssh -X firstname.lastname@example.org e.g. ssh -X email@example.com
You will be prompted to enter you password, after which you will be presented with a command prompt.
You should see a prompt:
If you instead you see a prompt like bash-$ run resetenv and take option 1 - this will set up your environment to run modules which is how we start all our CAD tools.
Note: OS X systems (10.7 & above) will need to install XQuartz to enable X-Windows sessions. X-Windows is no longer supported natively.
DO NOT tinker with your environmental files (.login, .cshrc, .bashrc, etc)
DO NOT add environmental files (like .bash_aliases)
All of the above will break modules
To launch the software on the Linux Application Servers, please use the commands available at https://www.ece.utexas.edu/it/applications
From Microsoft Windows
First, you need to have an SSH program installed. We recommend that you use Putty because it is free and easy to use. Also, Putty supports X11 forwarding which allows you to run graphical applications through your ssh connection when you have an X server running on your computer. A recommend and free X server application is Xming. This will allow you to remotely run a graphical instance of applications such as Cadence or Matlab.
For detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to install, configure, and secure an X-manager for Windows systems, please refer to the following guideline:
Note: Be sure to also download and install the Xming-fonts from the Xming source page above.
