Academic Enrichment and Free Electives

Both AE and Free Electives:

  • Same requirements, just a different name!
  • 14 credit hours, no more than 16 hours
  • An Advanced Math or a Basic Science course required
  • Select courses from the Course Database
  • You may petition a course that is NOT on the Course Database.

How to complete the Academic Enrichment or Free Electives Process:

Step 1: Declare Tech Core/Component

Academic Enrichment:
Declare your primary and secondary tech cores (select AE as your secondary). Information about tech cores here.

Free Electives:
Declare your tech component first (only 1). Afterwards, Free Electives should be picked up correctly.

Step 2:

Read through the  Course Database
Important tips:

  • Check for pre-requisites for all courses (both EE and non-EE).
  • If a class is listed on the Database, this does not guarantee it will be offered or that you will be able to register for it.
  • Consult outside departments how to enroll in their courses as a non-major.

Step 3: Academic Enrichment (2014-2016 and 2016-2018 catalog):

⇒⇒⇒ AE Qualtrics Survey

  • AE is an optional secondary Tech Core.
  • Qualtrics Survey is required to select your AE courses so an ECE advisor can update your degree audit.
  • Use Course Database for a list of pre-approved courses.
  • To petition a course NOT on the Course Database, do so via the AE Qualtrics survey.
    • Link the most recent course syllabus. The Undergrad Faculty Advisor reviews the petitions.
  • AE Qualtrics Surveys due at least 1 year before graduation.
  • You can change AE until the 12th class day of the graduating semester via the same Qualtrics survey.

    Free Electives (2018-2020 catalog):

⇒⇒⇒ Free Electives Survey

  • Qualtrics survey NOT required*
    • If IDA is not picking up Free Electives correctly, fill out the Free Elective survey so an advisor can fix the error.
  • IDA should pick up your Free Electives courses after you select tech component.
  • It is YOUR responsiblity to run your degree audit and check its accuracy.
  • Use Course Database for a list of pre-approved courses.
  • To petition transfer coursework, use the Free Electives Survey.
  • To petition a course not on the Course Database, also use the Free Electives Survey.
    • Link the most recent course syllabus. The Undergrad Faculty Advisor reviews the petitions.
