Academic Enrichment // and // Free Electives

  • Academic Enrichment is for 2012-2014, 2014-2016, 2016-2018 catalogs.
    • Students may select Academic Enrichment (AE) as an option for their Secondary Technical Core.
  • Free Electives is for the 2018-2020 catalog
    • Free Electives is required for all students in this catalog.
  • Both AE and Free Electives:
    • They are the SAME THING, just a different name!
    • require 14 credit hours, including an advanced math/ basic science course
    • courses can be selected from the Course Database
    • students may petition a course(s) that is NOT listed on the Course Database. 

For students on Academic Enrichment:

  • Students must submit a Qualtrics Survey to select their AE coursework. Once students submit their Surveys, an ECE advisor will update their IDA degree audit.
  • Please see the Course Database for a list of pre-approved courses.
  • If students want to take a course that is not listed on the Course Database, they may petition a course (also done on the Qualtrics Survey). Students will be required to link the most recent course syllabus.The Undergraduate Faculty Advisor reviews the petitions.
  • Qualtrics Surveys must be submitted at least 12 months before graduation. Any requests to change AE courses can be submitted until the 12th class day of the graduating semester through the same Qualtrics Survey.

For students on Free Electives:

  • No qualtrics survey is required; the IDA degree audit will automatically pick up your 14 hours of Free Electives. It is YOUR responsiblity to run your degree audit and check its accuracy
  • Please see the Course Database for a list of pre-approved courses.
  • If students want to take a course that is not listed on the Course Database, they may submit a petition (called "Free Electives Petition"- coming soon).Students will be required to link the most recent course syllabus. The Undergraduate Faculty Advisor reviews the petitions.

Submission Dates

AE Qualtrics surveys are accepted during the following dates only:
  • Spring 2019: Janaury 14th - May 10th 

How to complete the Academic Enrihcment Qualtrics Survey:

Step 1:

Declare your primary and secondary technical cores (include AE as your secondary).
Information and procedures about declaring technical cores here

Step 2:

Read through the pre-approved AE/Free Elective Course Database Other important tips:
  • Check for pre-requisites - You must meet all prerequisite and co-requisites for the offering department.
  • Research how to enroll in courses in other departments as a non-major. Departments have different processes and procedures for this.
  • Plan ahead! Know when courses are offered. Some courses may be offered only once a year or every other year
 

Step 3:

Submit the Qualtrics Survey once you have selected your courses!

Step 4: 

If you selected Software Engineering as your primary technical core, please review the following information:
  • Students must take EE 316 or EE 445L as a tech elective.
If you selected Data Science as your primary technical core, please review the following information:
  • Students must take EE 316 or EE 445S or EE 471C as a tech elective.

Need to change your AE courses?

Re-submit the AE Qualtrics Survey to request the changes and update your new courses. This must be completed no later than the 12th class day of your graduating semester.

Need to petition a course that's NOT on the Course Database?

Review the guidelines on Academic Enrichment/Free Electives:  AE/Free Elective Guidelines
If you're doing Academic Enrichment, you can do so via the same Qualtrics Survey. It'll ask if you if all the AE courses are on the Course Database. Click "NO" and post a link to the course syllabus.
 If you're under the Free Electives, you can petition with the "Free Elective Petition Form". Coming soon!

I’m in the (12-14, 14-16, 16-18) catalog, what are the procedures for updating or selecting Academic Enrichment courses?

How can I use the Course Database?
Search through the Course Database for courses you want to use towards Academic Enrichment and/or Free Electives.
 
I don’t know where to find my catalog?
When you run a degree audit, you should be able to see your catalog.
 
I’m a senior graduating the next semester and I need to update my Academic Enrichment?
Submit the AE Qualtrics survey and indicate you want to change your courses. The link for the Qualtrics survey is above under Step 3. The deadline to update AE courses is the 12th class day of your graduating semester. 
 
Do I need to write a career statement?
No, Career statements are no longer necessary.
