Academic Enrichment and Free Electives

Both AE and Free Electives:

  • Have the same requirements, just a different name!
  • 14 credit hours, no more than 16 hours
  • An Advanced Math or a Basic Science course required
  • Only 3 hours lower division
  • Pick courses from the Course Database
  • You may petition a course that is NOT on the Course Database. 
  • Read the AE/ Free Electives GUIDELINES 
     

For students on Academic Enrichment:
(2014-2016, 2016-2018 catalogs)

  • (AE) is an optional secondary Tech Core.
  • A Qualtrics Survey is required to select your AE courses so an ECE advisor can update your degree audit.
  • Use the Course Database for a list of pre-approved courses.
  • To petition a course NOT on the Course Database, you can do so via the Qualtrics survey.
    • You have to link the most recent course syllabus.The Undergrad Faculty Advisor reviews the petitions.
  • Qualtrics Surveys must be submitted at least 1 year before graduation. 
  • To change AE, do so until the 12th class day of the graduating semester via the Qualtrics survey.
     

For students on Free Electives
(2018-2020 catalog only):

  • A qualtrics survey is NOT required*
    • If the degree audit is not picking up Free Electives correctly, fill out the Free Electives Survey so an advisor can fix the error.
  • The IDA degree audit should automatically pick up your Free Electives courses.
  • It is YOUR responsiblity to run your degree audit and check its accuracy.
  • Use the Course Database for a list of pre-approved courses.
  • 3 hours of transfer coursework is accepted under the 18-20 catalog only. 
  • To petition a course, you can also do so via the Free Electives Survey.
    • You have to link the most recent course syllabus. The Undergrad Faculty Advisor reviews the petitions.

How to complete the Academic Enrichment or Free Electives Process:

Step 1:

 

For students on Academic Enrichment:
First, declare your primary and secondary tech cores (select AE as your secondary). Information about tech cores here.
 
For students on Free Electives:
You have to declare your tech component first. Afterwards, the degree audit will be updated and then your Free Electives will be picked up correctly. 

Step 2:
 

Read through the pre-approved AE/Free Elective Course Database
Other important tips:
  • Check for pre-requisites for all courses (both EE and non-EE).
  • If a class is listed on the Database, this does not guarantee it will be offered or that you will be able to register for it.
  • Consult outside departments how to enroll in their courses as a non-major.

Need to change your AE courses?

Re-submit the AE Qualtrics Survey to request the changes and update your new courses. This must be completed no later than the 12th class day of your graduating semester.

Need to petition a course that's NOT on the Course Database?

Review the GUIDELINES on Academic Enrichment/Free Electives, then submit the surveys. (Links in Step 3 listed above ^)
If you are Academic Enrichment, you can petition on the AE Qualtrics Survey. It'll ask if you if all the AE courses are on the Course Database. Click "NO" and post a link to the course syllabus.
 If you're under the Free Electives, you can petition with the "Free Elective Survey".

I’m in the (12-14, 14-16, 16-18) catalog, what are the procedures for updating or selecting Academic Enrichment courses?

How can I use the Course Database?
Search through the Course Database for courses you want to use towards Academic Enrichment and/or Free Electives.
 
I don’t know where to find my catalog?
When you run a degree audit, you should be able to see your catalog.
 
I’m a senior graduating the next semester and I need to update my Academic Enrichment.
Submit the AE Qualtrics survey and indicate you want to change your courses. The link for the Qualtrics survey is above under Step 3. The deadline to update AE courses is the 12th class day of your graduating semester. 
 
Do I need to write a career statement?
No, Career statements are no longer necessary.
 

Software Engineering and Data Science Students:

  • If you selected Software Engineering as your primary tech core and AE as your secondary, students must take EE 316 or EE 445L as a tech elective.
     
  • If you selected Data Science as your primary tech core and AE as your secondary, students must take EE 316 or EE 445S or EE 471C as a tech elective.
