Memory and communication are the primary reasons that our time-to-solution is no better than it currently is ... the memory system is slow; the communication overhead is high; and yet a significant amount of research is still focused on increasing processor performance, rather than decreasing (the cost of) data movement. I will discuss recent & near-term memory-system technologies including high-bandwidth DRAMs and nonvolatile main memories, as well as the impact of tomorrow's memory technologies on tomorrow's applications and operating systems.

Medical imaging modalities such as MRI have transformed modern diagnostic medicine by providing safe and noninvasive approaches to seeing inside the body. However, traditional designs treat the data acquisition separately from the data processing, thereby limiting their capabilities. For example, conventional MRI exams do not leverage shared information across different scans. In this talk I present computational approaches to medical imaging that consider joint design of the data collection and the reconstruction algorithm to overcome these limitations.

Medical devices are increasingly investigated in the academic sector with the same rigor present in a commercial setting, thus ensuring that any technology developed has a realistic chance of translating from “research bench to patient bedside” and making a positive impact on patient care.  Within the context of an aging population and an exponential growth in healthcare costs, electromagnetic (EM) therapeutic and diagnostic technologies provide an attractive solution, since they are low cost, non-ionizing, and largely non-invasive.
