Interested in applying?
The UT Austin Office of Admissions makes all decisions regarding undergraduate admissions to the university. Applicants can communicate with admissions counselors about application status, decisions, campus visit event registration, academics, financial aid, and housing.
Prospective freshman, transfer and international students are also encouraged to review additional information about entrance requirements and the admissions process on the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Undergraduate Admissions webpage.
Campus Visits
Students interested in applying to the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are encouraged to attend a Cockrell School Information Session. Texas ECE also schedules regular group sessions to provide information on our program and coursework. Search for the next available ECE Department sub-session.
You may also request a visit with an ECE peer ambassador to provide you with information about our program and take you on a brief tour of our facilities. We ask that you request an appointment at least one week in advance. To schedule an appointment or for questions about our group information sessions, please contact us at ece-ambassador@utexas.edu.
Note: Students under the age of 18 that haven't been admitted to UT must be accompanied to campus visits by a parent or guardian.
Undergraduate Laptop Requirement
All undergraduate students majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering are required to have a laptop. Ensure your laptop is compliant.

Notes on the 26-28 catalog
Starting Fall 2026, admits to the ECE program will be on the 26-28 catalog, which includes the following changes for all ECE degrees (ECE, ECE Honors, and the ECE Honors/Canfield Business Honors degree):
- ECE 302, ECE 306, ECE 319K, ECE 312 have all been changed to 4 hour courses: ECE 402, ECE 406, ECE 419K, ECE 412. (This includes honors course variants)
- ECE students will now take PHY 303E: Electromagnetic/Quantum/Semiconductor Physics instead of PHY 303L Engineering Physics II and PHY 105N Engineering Physics II lab.
- The ECE department will no longer accept AP, IB, or UT Exams for PHY 303L/105N towards Engineering Degree requirements from incoming students.
- The ECE department will no longer accept transfer credit from incoming first time in college students equivalent to PHY 303L/105N towards Engineering Degree requirements.
- Students admitted to the ECE program from other programs, including internal and external applicants, may request permission to apply PHY 303L credit toward their degree.
Due to these changes, the number of required free elective hours has been reduced to 11 hours total.
These policies apply to new, incoming students starting Summer 2026. Students already enrolled at UT Austin will continue to follow rules and policies of prior catalogs.
