Joydeep Ghosh, along with his collaborators and students, were awarded the 2017 Distinguished Clinical Research Informatics Paper Award at the American Medical Informatics Association Joint Summits on Translational Sciences, held March 27-30 in San Francisco California. The award recognizes the paper “PheKnow-Cloud: A Tool of Evaluating High-Throughput Phenotype Candidates Using Online Medical Literature.” The paper provides a machine learning/A.I.

Prof. Yale Patt of Texas ECE has been named the recipient of the 2017 Friar Centennial Teaching Fellowship (FCTF). The Friar Society, the university’s oldest and most prestigious honor society, awards the Friar Centennial Teaching Fellowship annually to one outstanding undergraduate professor and celebrates excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Prof. Al Bovik has been named the recipient of the 2017 Edwin H. Land Medal awarded by The Optical Society (OSA), co-sponsored by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T).

Duy-Loan Le is one of four honorees that will be inducted in the 2017 Asian Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 13th in Seattle, WA. The Asian Hall of Fame was founded in 2004 to honor achievement, inspire the next generation, and build the national community of Asian Pacific Americans. 

Jette Henderson and Ryan Bridges have been awarded the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Distinguished Clinical Research Informatics Award for their work “PheKnow-Cloud: A Tool for Evaluating High-Throughput Phenotype Candidates using Online Medical Literature.” 

Wuxi Li has placed first in the 2017 ACM International Symposium on Physical Design (ISPD) Contest with his project Clock-Aware FPGA Placement. The ISPD provides a premier forum to exchange ideas and promote research on critical areas related to the physical design of VLSI systems. The contest is sponsored and organized by Xilinx, the largest FPGA company in the world. It uses industry-strength benchmarks and specifications, thus making it highly challenging. Compared to many other teams which have multiple students in each team, Li made it as the single student member in the UT team.

David Soloveichik, Texas ECE assistant professor, has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award for his work on "Robust molecular computation: error-correcting reaction networks and leakless DNA circuits." 

Robert Heath, Texas ECE professor, has received the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) 2017 Technical Achievement Award for Significant Contributions to Signal Processing in MIMO Communication Systems. 

A team of engineers led by 94-year-old John Goodenough, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, has developed the first all-solid-state battery cells that could lead to safer, faster-charging, longer-lasting rechargeable batteries for handheld mobile devices, electric cars and stationary energy storage.

Two Electrical & Computer Engineering Ph.D. students, Amritesh Rai and Maruthi Yogeesh, have been selected as finalists for the highly selective $100,000 United States Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QInF), along with one other team from The University of Texas at Austin.
