Future neuroprosthetics will be tightly coupled with the user in such a way that the resulting system can replace and restore impaired upper limb functions because controlled by the same neural signals than their natural counterparts. However, robust and natural interaction of subjects with sophisticated prostheses over long periods of time remains a major challenge. To tackle this challenge we can get inspiration from natural motor control, where goal-directed behavior is dynamically modulated by perceptual feedback resulting from executed actions.

In many applications, data-driven discovery is limited by the rate of data collection: the skilled labor it takes to operate a pipette, the time to execute a long-running physics simulation, the patience of an infant to remain still in an MRI, or the cost of labeling large corpuses of complex images. A powerful paradigm to extract the most information with such limited resources is active learning, or adaptive data collection, which leverages already-collected data to guide future measurements in a closed loop.

Magnetic nanodevices are receiving great attention these days due to their non-volatility and potential for extremely low energy dissipation. The field is rapidly evolving from rotating magnetic disks for mass storage to on-chip magnetic random access memory (MRAM). MRAM is in the advanced product development phase in a number of companies and is expected to be in widespread commercial application very soon. There is also intense interest in the possibility of magnetic logic devices.

Frequency synthesis and modulation by the DS fractional-N PLL are essential in modern wireless transceivers. In addition to loop parameter variability, leakage current, and matching problems, the DS fractional-N PLL needs to deal with quantization noise and nonlinearity in consideration of phase noise, spur, and settling time. In this talk, various fractional-N PLL architectures (analog/digital/hybrid) and recent circuit techniques for mitigating quantization and nonlinearity will be presented. Also, PLL-based modulation methods (1-point/2-point/2+-point) will be discussed.
