Andrea Alù Awarded 2016 International Commission for Optics Prize

Andrea Alù, Texas ECE Professor, is the recipient of the the 2016 International Commission for Optics (ICO) Prize. The ICO established the award in 1982 to be given each year to an individual who has made a “noteworthy contribution to optics, published or submitted for publication before he or she has reached the age of 40. The contribution in optics is measured chiefly by its impact on the field of optics generally, opening a subfield or significantly expanding an established subfield in research or technology.” Alu was recognized for his groundbreaking work on metatronics for ultrafast electronics and the localization of optical radiation in structured materials. He will receive his award and give an Ernst Abbe Lecture at the upcoming 24th ICO General Congress in Tokyo.

Alù holds the Temple Foundation Endowed Professorship No. 3. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Kavli Foundation Early Career Lectureship in Materials Science (2016), the Simons Investigators in Physics award (2016), the National Science Foundation Waterman Award (2015), the URSI Issac Koga Gold Medal (2011), an NSF CAREER award (2010), the AFOSR Young Investigator Award (2010), and the the Leopold B. Felsen Award for Excellence in Electrodynamics (2008). His research interests include electromagnetic theory and applications, metamaterials, plasmonics, and nanoelectromagnetics, among other areas in electromagnetics and acoustics.
