Janice Williams and Matthew Halpern Win Cockrell Awards

Janice Williams, ECE Senior Academic Advisor, is the recipient of the 2010 Cockrell School of Engineering Outstanding FIG Facilitator. Janice has served as an ECE “Squared for Success” FIG facilitator for nearly 7 years and loves the opportunity to connect with our newest members to our department.

Matthew Halpern is the recipient of the 2010 Cockrell School of Engineering FIG Mentor of the Year. Matt is a 2nd year ECE student who participated in FIG (First-Year Interest Group) during his 1st semester at UT. Dedicated to a genuine interest to help 20 incoming ECE students transition to UT, Matt decided to serve as this year’s “Squared for Success” FIG Mentor. Recognized for his generous, friendly disposition, Matt willingly went above and beyond the role of a mentor by welcoming his students prior to the first Fall semester class day via Facebook and e-mail. Matt also held regular weekly meetings with each of his FIG students to talk about anything from homework questions, which classes to take, and college life in general. Congratulations, Matt for sharing your knowledge and resources to our newest ECE students!

As the 2010 Outstanding Facilitator and Mentor, they exemplified a commitment to excellence and dedication for promoting quality mentoring. We appreciate their willingness to help the Cockrell School make a positive difference in students' university experience.
